Bicycle Locks - Get a safe Bike Lock

Bicycle Locks should be strong enough to stop thieves to break it within a few minutes or even less. Pay more money and get a real solid lock.

Most locks that are expensive and appear to be safe will be broken in less than a minute from an expert thief. If you don't believe this, please watch the videos.

How to break a U-Lock?

A lot of U-locks come with a round cylinder type key and they can easily be unlocked with a common pen. I am not sure if this problem has been fixed and if U-Locks are safe now. So just take this video as an example what could happen. I don't intend to offend or discredit any particular company here. Maybe this problem has been fixed by now. (Video from 12. October 2009)

To be fairly safe get this sort of bicycle lock. See image below. It is very hard to break.

I got his one and I know for sure that it is unbreakable. It cost around $100.- in Germany from Albus.

Whatever you do get a Quality Lock!

Consider the following Factors

Time to break it
If a potential thief realizes that it will take a lot of time to break your lock he is very likely searching for another bicycle that is easier to break because his risk of getting caught increases with the time he needs to break it. Just simple logic.

Always lock it to a fixed Object.
This will ensure that your bicycle can't be carried away.

If possible put in near other Bicycles.
Imagine your bike is parked among hundreds of other bikesthe probability decreases that the thief will pick yours.

If your bicycle is just by itself, the probability is 1:1 that it gets stolen if a thief wants to steal your bike at this particular location. If there are thirty other bikes around your bike, then the probability is just 1:30, which is much better.

In this scenario I assume that all bikes are new and have equal chances to get stolen. If there are only old rusted bikes around your new bike then a thief would pick yours, of course.
