Historians agree that Ernest Michaux invented the bicycle pedals and cranks in 1861. Some time earlier his father Pierre Michaux built bicycles with pedals and his son developed his work even further by adapting cranks and pedals on the front wheel of a draisine.

The first model was invented 1817 by the German Baron Karl von Drais who constructed the "Laufmaschine" (running machine) or was called Draisine (English) or velocipede and was patented by him in 1818.
This "hobby horse" was commercially successful and steerableand manufactured in Germany and France.
In 1820s to 1880s: 3 and 4-wheelers ermerged.
